Compare mileage readings and vehicle ownership records
A vehicle’s mileage and ownership timeline can add context to its condition and asking price. Review the sequence of recorded events, compare it with the seller’s documents and investigate discrepancies before treating a summary as conclusive.
Build a mileage timeline
Read odometer entries in date order and compare them with the current dashboard reading. Note the units shown in the report or supporting documents. A lower later reading, a large jump or a long gap deserves follow-up, but a history entry can also contain a reporting or data-entry error. Ask for records that help explain the discrepancy.
Understand ownership information
Ownership-related entries may help describe changes over time, but a vehicle history report is not a public directory of private owners. Do not expect private owner names, home addresses or contact information. A reported ownership estimate also does not replace the title, registration documents or the seller’s evidence that they can sell the vehicle.
Review title-related entries carefully
Where a supplied report contains title-related information, read the wording and dates carefully. A report does not certify a clean title or guarantee that every title event is included. Compare the information with the current documents and resolve concerns with the relevant authority before completing a vehicle purchase.
